Rotten Smells
The smell and taste of Hydrogen Sulfide is like rotten eggs or sulfur and is caused by decaying vegetation and oil deposits beneath the earth’s surface. Water with Hydrogen Sulfide can discolor beverages and make cooked foods taste differently. It can also alter the food’s appearance and cause washed vegetables to decay quicker. This chemical can corrode pipes and eats away at the metals used in your water using appliances. The sulfur can tarnish metals used in silverware and will discolor platinum, copper and brass.
The smell of chlorine like in a swimming pool is not what you want in your water. Chlorine is a powerful oxidant used as a disinfectant in commercial and household sanitation and is used by most water municipalities to clean bacteria out of our water supply. Chlorine can cause eye irritation, dry skin and can decrease the ability to breathe as it can restrict your air flow. Algae or mold smells are caused when water is caught in pipes and fixtures causing bacteria to grow. A common reason is pipes are clogged and slimy and collect all kinds of things washed down the drain. The growth appears as green algae like you would see in an unclean fish tank or pool. The reasons for the growth in your home are the same as they are in those other two cases. Wrong water chemistry allows bacteria growth. You wouldn’t swim in a green pool and you shouldn’t be ingesting it in your drinking water either.
Nitrates are undetectable as they have no taste or smell. They are essential in plant growth and often are added to crops to help them grow faster. Well water and water from springs have a high level of nitrates from evolution when rain falls and washes the nitrates into the eco system. High nitrate content is dangerous to human and pet health.
Bad Water Appearance
Turbidity - Turbidity is a term often used in water explanations to define cloudy water. It is caused by dirt and hard particles floating in your household water. It has a sandy texture and can damage o-rings, seals and valves reducing the life of household products such as toilets, sinks, faucets and appliances.
Acid - Acid in water will appear as green or blue stains on fixtures. Water by its nature wants to dissolve things when it passes by them. The degree of the problem in your home can be measure by the pH level 1 to 14. Water measuring below 7 is acidic and water measuring above 7 is alkaline. Neutral water is in the 7’s ideal water is between 7.4 to 7.6 pH level. That is why pools are best when maintained at those levels and healthy to swim in. Reverse osmosis and bottled water are typically acidic and not good to drink. Acid in water can turn copper fittings green and blue and eat away chrome faucets and pipes causing leaks. Acid will also and etch glassware and china and corrode water using appliances. Surprisingly though with all the damage Acid in water will do people consume it every day in the drinking water. If you had a choice would you select Reverse Osmosis and bottled water where the acid content is high or an AQUAPULSE 3000 system where pH is in balance.
Calcium & Magnesium - Hard water is hard on your body and your home. Calcium and magnesium are the two main chemicals that contribute to hard water. Hard water appears as a hard scale around your toilets, sinks and tubs. It is difficult to remove and collects on shower doors, clings to hair, and clogs your skin’s pores. Hard water collects in water heaters reducing efficiency, clogs pipes reducing water flow, and increases the required maintenance on water appliances as it damages many of the components housed on the interior of these units. However, calcium and magnesium are two essential elements for us to survive. Wouldn’t it be wise to manage these two nutrients in the proper form so they could be absorbed by the skin at proper levels to enhance our health and not damage pipes, fixtures and appliances?
